Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is one of the most requested events on the Disney calendar. It is a special Halloween event held inside the Magic Kingdom on select nights every fall. There has been a lot of hype over the years on social media for this event but a lot of my client families come to me looking for answers. What exactly is this event? Should we go or skip it with young kids? Should we add this to our already full Walt Disney World vacation plans? Let’s dive in.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a separately ticketed, after-hours event held on select nights at Magic Kingdom from August through October.

It's operates as a limited capacity after-hours event, which means Disney closes early for daily guests and they cap the number of tickets sold per night. Once the park closes for every-day guests, the party transforms the park into a family-friendly Halloween celebration complete with its own shows, rare character meet & greets, special fireworks, trick or treating throughout the park and even it’s own special snacks.

Dates and Hours:

The party runs select nights in August, September, and October. Party hours are 7pm to midnight, with early entry starting at 4pm for anyone holding a party ticket. You do not need a separate day ticket to use early entry on a party night. Your party ticket alone gets you into Magic Kingdom starting at 4pm.

**Halloween Party Exclusive Shows Not to Miss**

Mickey's Boo-to-You Halloween Parade is the marquee event of the night, a full parade with Disney characters in Halloween costume making their way through the park. It is one of the best parades of the year and one you should not miss! The parade music is whimsical and not so scary for young families and such a great memory for the night. Keep an eye out for the Hitchhiking Ghosts and a few villains too! It runs twice, starting at Frontierland and heading down to Main Street, typically around 8:15pm and again around 11:15pm.

Not-So-Spooky Spectacularis the nightly fireworks show over Cinderella's Castle, starring Mickey and friends alongside some pretty wicked Disney villains. It's a party exclusive fireworks show, packed with Halloween spirit and worth grabbing a spot early for. It usually goes off around 10pm.

Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular is a live stage show at the castle, and it's the one villain-lovers get excited for. Expect Disney's most iconic villains taking over the stage with plenty of theatrical flair. This show runs several times between early evening and midnight and easy to fit in between other plans.

There's entertainment running all night that you can pop into whenever it fits your plan. Disney Junior Jam sets up at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe and is a great fit if you've got littles who love their own dance party. The Descendance Dance Party takes over Tomorrowland for the older kids. Halloween fun in Fantasyland & Frontierland keeps the energy going all night long!

Characters:

Characters are one of the biggest draws of the whole night, and it's a lot of what makes this party feel different from a regular day at Magic Kingdom. You’ll be able to meet Jack & Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas, Prince Eric and Ariel, Belle and Gaston, the Evil Queen, Maleficent, the Mad Hatter & so many more. Add in fan favorites like Mickey, Minnie, and Pooh and Friends dressed for Halloween and you've got a lineup worth building a plan around. Characters are scattered across every land rather than clustered in one spot, so expect to crisscross the park a bit as the night goes on. The most popular characters can have lines up to 2 hours long so if a specific rare character is the whole reason you bought tickets, you’ll definitely want a scope out a good plan before your party night!

Costumes:

Probably another standout of this event is both kids and adults can wear costumes to the party. Typically during the day, there are strict rules about what attire is allowed in the parks. It’s part of the reason why “Disney bounding” has become so popular. But for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party everyone is allowed to dress up. There are of course still some safety rules (full masks aren't allowed, and nothing that could pass for a real weapon) but seeing families go all out and get dressed up for Halloween is part of the fun!

Trick-or-Treating

Trick-or-treating is a fun addition to this event! Spread across the park, there will be designated stops along the way and allergy-friendly options are also available. You’ll get a treat bag as you enter the party but I recommend having a bigger bag to store your goodies in!

Dining During the Party

Here's the part that catches people off guard. Most Magic Kingdom restaurants, including a good chunk of quick service spots, close by 6 pm to get ready for the party. So if you were planning to grab dinner once you're inside for the night, you’ll find limited options especially as the night goes on. The handful of spots that do stay open lean all the way into it with a party-only menu.

**The big question: Is it worth the ticket cost?**

I get this question A LOT. It’s one of the things we go over during a consult while planning out your Disney trip because there are too many factors involved for one blog post. But I’ll give you the short answer:

If you're after the full Magic Kingdom experience, this isn’t a shortcut you may think it is. It’s also just as expensive if not more than a regular park day. But if Halloween is the draw, the party on its own can be a great night! Given everything packed into it with exclusive entertainment, characters, food, and trick-or-treating, it's worth the ticket for most families who love Halloween or planning a visit during the fall.

But you need a dedicated plan.

This event can be complex for most first timers. Not only are you managing kids in a giant theme park, there’s a lot to do and see. It can be hard to know what exactly is happening when and what to prioritize.
